Just Listen

Back on October 25, 2008, I sat down to contemplate a very personal query.  It went like this....

If you were to get quiet enough for your inner "stuff" to bubble to the surface, what might be the "one thing" in your spiritual life that God would want you to see?

Well a lot bubbled up that day in the form of the following poem. Today, it helps remind me of the areas I continually need to work on.  I hope it will inspire you to listen to the voice of God within you.
JUST LISTEN
Talk to me!
You're a fake.
Stop making it all about you.
You have no "real" spiritual life - it is a facade.
Your pride has puffed you up.
You are in demand - only unto yourself.
You have no clue of the freedom I give.
Actually, you only want what you think you need.
Not what I can give you.
You are out of control!

Your body is crying out for a change.
You are physically fat and spiritually anemic.
Your pleasure and happiness out weigh my blessings.
Your head is too big for your heart.
You neglect yourself to the expense of those you love.
You think you know but how little you actually know.
Stop letting your eyes wonder.
Stop letting your mind take a vacation.
Look at me!

Talk to me!
You are so busy that the beauty of this world is missed.
You don't even want to know your wife and kids.
You only want you!
You don't want to contribute to this world.
Unless you get something out of it.
Your life must suck.
It must be miserable to be all about you.

Where do I fit into your selfishness?
Where do I fit into your day?
I am an afterthought
A fleeting moment.
A judgmental presence.
I want to love you.
I want to show you grace and mercy.
But you won't let me!
You are a hard nut to crack.

Yet you are cracking.
Actually you are in pieces.
You can't hold yourself together.
Your anxiety says you know you can't.
Your worries about image,
about importance,
about looking good are your downfall.
And you disgust me.
You are better than that.
People believe in you.
Stop being their savior.
Stop making them follow you!
Talk to me...

Better yet, just listen.
